Robot Wednesday and First Fan Dani

Robot Art by Danica Sevilla If you’ve ever visited the comments at Space Base 8, you may have seen encouraging words from Danica Sevilla, today’s artist for Robot Wednesday. I call her First Fan Dani, because she followed my blog, Monkey Always Wins, where I documented the creation of Space Base 8. She was a Space Base 8 fan even before the first comic strip was posted. Now that’s a Number One Fan! Over at Dani’s blog, Baring My Heart, she posted a really cool piece about Space Base 8 and our longtime internet friendship, and about how a girl from Down Under may (eventually) get to go to Disneyland. Check it out. Here’s another robot by Dani. So cool! Another a-MAZE-ing robot by First Fan Dani Thanks so much to you, Dani, for the artwork and the support over these last few years. You really are Number One. 🙂

ROBOT WEDNESDAY

BOB from The Petri Dish

 Brains On Board

Today’s robot is a tribute to the webcomic The Petri Dish by John Sutton. John has been kind enough to send lots of guest art to fill the Space Base 8 blog lately, so in return I have painted a picture of  Bob (B.O.B. for Brains On Board), whom you will find toddling around in the comics over there at The Petri Dish. I don’t do much watercolor painting outside of my day job, and I’m glad to have the chance to do some comic strip character watercolors. I think I’ll do some other watercolor paintings for RRR and share them with you all soon!

Robot Wednesday

John sutton's bot! Here’s another excellent cartoon from John Sutton of The Petri Dish, that awesome cyborg-mad scientist-intelligent squirrel webomic I’ve been telling you guys about. I like how the scary battlebot has a tiny smiley face head.  Way  cute! Everyone go check out The Petri Dish. Is so funny.

Ray Gun Monday

Superior Rocket Gun   This is the second toy ray gun in my newly begun collection. it is the Superior Rocket Gun from the 1950s, and I absolutely love it.  I first saw one in the book, “Zap! Ray Gun Classics” and showed it to my wife. “Look, Honey. It’s a dart gun… shaped like a rocket jet… and it fires three darts! Three!  How many cool features can one toy ray gun have?” She smiled, patted me on the head, gave me a cookie and sent me outside to play. Not a week later I searched for “toy ray gun” on ebay, and what do you know? There it was the Superior Rocket Gun, and not expensive, either. I bid on it, and it was soon mine. This Rocket Gun appears to be in working order, but since it didn’t come with any darts, I’m not sure for sure if it works. I hope it takes some kind of “standard” darts and that I can find some that will work so I can test it out. There will be more expensive and rare guns in my collection someday, but I think this one will stay my favorite for a long time.   I like this book, “Zap! Ray Gun Classics“, and you can get it at Amazon. Click on my Affiliate link and I might get, like, a penny or two  from the sale.

ROCKETSHIP FRIDAY

Cargo Hauler Rocketship by J. S. Rowe

It’s Rocketship Friday, and as you can see we have some extra special Rocketship artwork today.  You may have seen the artist Jande, “J.S.” Rowe’s work on her webcomic Aedre’s Firely, or maybe noticed her contributions to the comments section here on Space Base 8. This Spaceship is named The Rusty Cow. “She’s an interplanetary cargo scow I hope to incorporate into my Wheeler’s Orbits comic, which is on the boards for about 5 years from now, if I have it figured right.” personally, I can’t wait 5 years to see this comic. I’ll have to send Oril out into the future to check it out. Thanks, Jande, for a fantastic piece that I’m sure everyone will love!

ROBOT WEDNESDAY

Eric Scales's Triangle Head Robot Illustrator Eric Scales, he of The Ol’ Sketchbook, has done it again! You can tell this robot he sketched certainly has a job to do, what with the control panel hand and the radar dish ears. And want to see the best of robot couture? Titanium alloy high collars are back this season. Ohh la-la. Check out last week’s Robot Wednesday  for another rockin’ robot sketch from Eric.

RAYGUN MONDAY

Razer Toy Ray Gun While serching for inspiration for Space Base 8, I fell in love with old space toys, especially toy ray guns. I couldn’t resist starting a collection of my own, and this is the vintage ray gun I bought to start my collection. It is called the Razer Ray Gun, and boy, is it peachy keen! When you pull the trigger it makes a death-ray zapping sound and makes sparks that are visible through the translucent red plastic tip.  I love the fin details on the back, the rings on the barrel, the sparks, and the sound it makes. Bring it on, invaders from mars, I’m ready for ya! It works pretty well, but the trigger sometimes slides out of its track and misfires, which makes me afraid of breaking it  by pulling the trigger too hard. So this one is better put o a shelf than taken to the playground. I’d definitely like to get one in better condition someday, but I think this one is a terrific start for my collection. According to the book, “Zap! Ray Gun Classics“, This ray gun was made by H. Y.Manufacturing, Hong Kong, in the 1970s. (Click on that link to get the book from  Amazon; I’m an Associate).  Judging by the design, I would guess it is from the early, pre-Star Wars 1970s, when the idea of what outer space stuff would look like was more “neato gee-whiz”, and less “that looks real, better pass a law banning it”. Next Monday I will post a photo of the second toy ray gun I have acquired for my collection. Have you ever seen a dart gun that fired not one… not two… but three darts? I have.  And what’s more, that’s not even the coolest thing about this toy!
